Is Earth Day Only Once A Year?

We all know that we celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd every year. One day a year you cut down on driving your car, use less electricity, plant a tree, and other similar things. But what are you doing the other 364 days a year to help save the planet Earth?

Since Lent just ended I am going to compare Lent to Earth Day, kind of. During the 40 days of Lent you are supposed to give upsomething or start doing something. When you do these things you hope to create a habit so it will become easier to do or don’t do them. This goes perfectly into what I think people should do for Earth Day. Don’t use less electricity for one day, start doing that every day or even just a few days a week.

Here is a list of simple things that you can start to do help preserve this great place we call home:

1. Carpool/Bike/Walk/Public Transportation

Maybe once a week if it is possible, ride your bike to work. It might take a little bit longer to get to work but think about the exercise you will get and all the fresh air you are getting. Who knows, you might end up enjoying it so much you do it every day.

2. Recycle

There are so many products in our everyday lives that can be recycled. I started by keeping bins in my house of products that can be recycled like, paper, plastic, glass, and even metals. Once these bins get fool I take them to my local recycling location in town. Some towns even have a recycling bin for you to put by the curb that they will come and pick up for you.

3. Unplug/Turn Off

This is probably one of the easiest things to do and it will also help you be more cost efficient too. When leaving a room that you won’t be back in simply just turn off the lights when you are not in there. You can also go one step further by unplugging products that you aren’t using also. That can be your TV, coffee pot, toaster, hair dryer, phone chargers (when not using them), and lamps. If you want to take this to the next step you can open windows and doors and using nature as your air conditioner and enjoy the fresh air.

4. Reusable Bags

When going to the grocery store bring in your own reusable bags instead of using their plastic bags that they have there for you. A lot of store sell them also so if you do forget yours that have them there for you. To go along with this if you do end up using those plastic bags find another use for them at home. I use mine at trash bags for the small trash cans, take my lunch in them, and pick up dog poop with them as well. Here is a link to 60 Ways to Reuse Plastic Bags that I recently found on Pinterest.

5. Stop Drinking Bottled Water

I feel like half the trash that I pick up when I am hiking is of plastic water bottles. I haven’t used a plastic water bottle in a long time. I have several reusable water bottles that I carry with me everywhere. I have a filtered water pitcher that I fill up and then pour into my reusable water bottles. It can take up to hundreds of year to biodegrade some of the plastic water bottles that people use.

There are tons of other things that you can do that on Earth Day and the other 364 days of the year but these are just a few. If you want to brag about what you are doing on Earth Day on social media, don’t forget to tag us (Instagram: @Adventures_In_Texas Twitter: @Advs_In_Texas) and use the hashtag #EarthDay. If you have any other helpful tips or things you do leave a comment and let me know.
